Vinpocetine is an extract from the seeds of the periwinkle plant (Vinca minor), a common, vine like evergreen ground cover. Vinpocetine is a Nootropic and has been shown to provide several advantages for the human brain, including memory enhancement, increased cognitive performance, improved cerebral circulation and higher mental acuity and awareness. Vinpocetine helps in increasing the blood flow in the brain and thus stimulates brain activity. It also has neuro-protective effects and is used for cerebrovascular disorders and also for memory problems.
Vinpocetine's main method of action is by way of increasing cGMP production (a molecule directly responsible for endothelial nitric oxide release) and by increasing the production of norepinephrine. Vinpocetine is thought to inhibit the phosphodiesterase (PDE) enzyme, an enzyme responsible for blocking cGMP release. Blocking PDE allows for dilation of blood vessels resulting in more oxygen in the brain. Norepinephrine is a byproduct of dopamine and is, in part, responsible for increased vigilance, alertness, concentration and even stress capacity.
